THE COVENANT CHAIN:
Native proxies were used by all colonies to wage war on other competing colonies. After 1664, British - New York Governor, Sir Edmund Andros, exploited friendly Dutch influence with the Mohawk to sign the Peace of Albany with the Iroquois. This forged the "covenant chain" which protected the Iroquois from retribution for their raids on settlements in other (competing) colonies.
COMMITTEE ON SAFETY:
Heeding the advice of the First Continental Congress, colonist's took up arms, began seizing stores of weapons and formed militias to forge their own sense of protection. Locally, the "Committee on Safety" was the militia and the building at 28 Washington Avenue was a Revolutionary War era armory from which
Washington urged Schulyer
to seize British arms very early in the war.
